Story by Hiroko Rowley

Illustrations by Hannah Mortensen

On a cold, dark morning in midwinter, young Hiroko hesitates to leave her warm bunk bed. Despite the darkness, and even though it is a school day, much work awaits her Japanese-Canadian family on their Alberta potato farm.

Based on childhood recollections, The Root Cellar tells a simple and touching wartime story of duty, hardship, and family togetherness. Hiroko ultimately learns that helping her family brings rewards. Through her mother's actions and stories, she also learns the value of helping family members far, far away.
