FE-A-BYU: Japanese Canadian History in Fairview and Mount Pleasant
Nikkei National MuseumFe-a-byu is the Japanese word for the enclave of Fairview, another pre-war Japanese Canadian community spanning from Main Street to Oak Street in Vancouver, which sprung up as workers laboured around False Creek sawmills.
The 30 page booklet describes local Nikkei history including the Buddhist Church, Japanese Language school, Columbia Street United Church, and excerpts from oral histories describing the area. Historic Vancouver heritage buildings are identified in context, and four existing Nikkei related buildings are highlighted, including perhaps the only existing tenement built by Genya Yada and Rinnosuke Takehara.
