The author interprets the economic, social and political events affecting Japanese Canadians from the late 1880s to the 1950s in Steveston, BC.
Steveston developed as a fishing centre with a concentration of salmon canneries along its waterfront. It also developed as a tourist centre because of its proximity to Vancouver and New Westminster. Tourists were drawn to Steveston by the phenomenal runs of salmon, the romance and gold rush allure of fishing, and the ethnic diversity of its work force....
