戦時下カナダの日系人社会を、写真帖から読み解く

第二次世界大戦中、カナダ政府は日系人を太平洋岸から内陸へ強制移動させた。本書では、その中でも「自活移動」と呼ばれる移動形態に注目し、ブリティッシュ・コロンビア州グランドフォークスの事例を中心に、日系カナダ人の経験を再検討する。

研究の中心史料となるのは、1942年から1946年にかけてグランドフォークス周辺地域に居住していた日系カナダ人家族を写した『グランドフォークス在留日本人記念寫眞帖』である。手作りの革装製アルバムには、当時の90世帯のうち56世帯の家族写真がおさめられている。

さらに、日本とカナダの研究者およびコミュニティ関係者による論文・エッセイに加え、この写真帖の復刻版、居住者一覧、関連地図・図表を収録し、写真が伝える記憶と歴史を多角的に読み解く。

During War World II, the Canadian government forcibly relocated Japanese Canadians from the Pacific coast to inland regions. This volume examines the experiences of Japanese Canadians by focusing on one of the lesser-known forms of relocation known as "self-supporting relocation," with particular attention to the community of Grand Forks, British Columbia.

The starting point for the study is the Grand Forks Japanese Canadian Commemorative Photo Book, a handmade leather-bound album created in 1946 by members of the Japanese Canadian community. The album contains family photographs of 56 of the 90 Japanese Canadian families who lived in the Grand Forks area between 1942 and 1946.

This bilingual volume brings together scholarly articles by researchers from Japan and Canada, essays by community members and descendants, and a facsimile reproduction of the original photo album. It also includes a list of residents as well as historical maps and tables. Through these materials, the book explores how photographs preserve memory and contribute to the practice of public history connecting Canada and Japan.
