A coming-of-age story of fifteen-year-old Miyakichi Ezaki who emigrates from Japan to Canada in 1915 with his mother Yuki to join his father Jinshiro as a fisherman on the Fraser River. The novel is primarily set in the historically Japanese fishing village of Steveston, British Columbia.
